A conversation with Dr. Noreen Masud, author of “A Flat Place”
The Department of Literary Studies at Ghent University is pleased to invite you all to an event with the inimitable Dr. Noreen Masud (Bristol University)!
Dr. Elly McCausland (Ghent University) will be in conversation with Dr. Masud, along with Dr. Kristof Smeyers (KU Leuven), centred around her incredible book A Flat Place (Hamish Hamilton, 2023). Our conversation will focus on themes of knowledge, trauma, memory, emotion, nature writing, and more.
A Flat Place was long- and/or shortlisted for basically every award it was eligible for. It was a book of the year according to The Guardian, The Sunday Times, and The New Yorker. It was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction, the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award, the Jhalak Prize, the Ondaatje Prize, and the Books Are My Bag Readers’ Award. It was also my personal favourite book of the year, in case you trust my taste more than several handfuls of prizes.
A Flat Place was recommended by Sara Ahmed (!), who said this about it: “Achingly beautiful, lovingly crafted work, in which stories of violence and memory, colonialism and patriarchy, family and friendship, are as layered as a landscape. A Flat Place reminds us that there is hope in the smallest of gestures.”
You’re all very welcome to join us, and to invite your students to do the same!
