  • Thursday 13 February, 8 p.m. – 9.30 p.m.
  • Auditorium 3 Suzanne Lilar, Blandijnberg 2, 9000 Ghent
  • Entrance is free (no need to register)

Dr Noreen Masud (Bristol University) will be interviewed about her memoir A Flat Place (Hamish Hamilton, 2023) by Dr Kristof Smeyers (KU Leuven) and Dr Sigrid Wallaert (UGent). The conversation will focus on themes such as knowledge, trauma, memory, emotion, and nature writing.

A Flat Place was long- and/or shortlisted for nearly every award it was eligible for. It was a book of the year according to The Guardian, The Sunday Times, and The New Yorker. It was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction, the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award, the Jhalak Prize, the Ondaatje Prize, and the Books Are My Bag Readers’ Award. A Flat Place was recommended by Sara Ahmed, who had the following to say about it: “Achingly beautiful, lovingly crafted work, in which stories of violence and memory, colonialism and patriarchy, family and friendship, are as layered as a landscape. A Flat Place reminds us that there is hope in the smallest of gestures.”

In collaboration with Paard Van Troje, PEN Flanders, and The Dutch Review of Books.
